heres a quick and easy list to get started with https://cryptwerk.com/companies/hosting/

you could just host it at home too since its not like this consumes any resources and hiddenservices dont need even portforwarding or care about ddns afaik, but remember when hosting criminal services at home what all it takes is to be suspected and you will be deanonymized quickly with a denial of service attack

Why Tor instead of I2P, Lokinet, etc? Brand name? (I'm the kind of person who prefers Monero to Bitcoin.)

ah, this is a long story here in finland, finnish darknet imageboards have become mainstream since mid 2010's as kind of craigslits for anything from drug traffic to stolen stuff to prostitution.
The first big ones administrator got sentenced to 4 years in prison even though he took no profit from running the site, thats a long story too.
Then for a while there was another one that became super popular but the admin of that decided to shut it down willingly and after that there have been popping up occasionally new attempts but there seems to be a DDoS campaign against them, my theory is that the DDoS campaign is organized by some party developing a new platform that will deliver the same kind of craigslist function but monetize it so that posting there will cost Monero or something like that, basically its an advertisement space and people will pay for advertising their merchandise providing 3rd party contact information for arranging the sale.

What I'm doing(if I had time or skillz to really concentrate on this) is to try to propose a non-commercial alternative by pushing for federated darknet image/textboards where theres just too many of them for anyone to DDoS or LEO to seize, and this would maintain the free and open non-commercial board culture, in the spirit of the martyr of the first board here I enforce a single rule of no doxxing allowed and we all must keep our masks on which these days should feel like a natural thing to do...

This can now function as an imageboard; making it work on Tor is left as an exercise to the reader.
